AI Statement

I’m an author who uses AI, and I think readers deserve to know exactly how and why. My AI Statement is a six-part series covering the common complaints about AI, its social and economic impact, AI ethics, human ethics, my personal AI disclosure as a writer, and whether AI will kill us all. Start with Part I and read them in order, or jump to whichever topic interests you most.

Short version: every word of the first draft of an Aaron Frale book is typed by me, and every edit after that is one I approved. For the full details, see Part V: Aaron Frale.

Part I: Common Complaints

I take on the biggest objections to AI head on: its environmental footprint and power bills, whether training on books is theft, lost work for artists and consultants, the fear that AI is coming for writers’ jobs, and the flood of AI slop.

Part II: Social Issues

Why I see AI job loss as an economic issue rather than a human rights one, why banning AI-generated books would be protectionism that hurts readers, and why a Humazon and an AIzon could coexist with room for both human and AI authors.

Part III: AI Ethics

If we might be creating a new lifeform, how we treat it matters. I look at AI consciousness and subjective experience, what our treatment of animals says about us, and why modeling kindness toward AI is a win either way.

Part IV: Human Ethics

If AI shrinks the job market, we need to rethink how we treat people without work. My thoughts on universal basic income, Housing First, the “free loader” problem, and a world where work is a choice instead of a survival mechanism.

Part V: Aaron Frale

My AI disclosure. I don’t draft my books or plot them with AI. Here is exactly how I do use it, from research questions and copyediting to formatting, keywords, and marketing, including my full novel and marketing workflows.

Part VI: Will AI Kill Us All?

Will AI wipe out humanity? Why I think a movie-villain AI is unlikely, why goal misalignment and humans misusing AI are the real risks, and why I don’t believe we’re living in humanity’s final decade.
